Problem

MPH was looking to revamp their radar gun for a sleek look while maintaining function and some familiar features to existing products.

Solution

Catalyst was able to provide design consulting work to bring this new generation of product to life. Speedgun Pro was developed with user flexibility in mind to become one of the most advanced radars available on the market.

The unit can be used as a handheld device or mounted to a vehicle for moving use. The user interface was developed for flexibility as the unit can be controlled by the backlit LCD touch screen or by remote control. Considerations for weight and size were accommodated, making the Speedgun Pro the lightest and most compact unit on the market.

Challenges Met

Working With Client

Managing client communications was difficult at times. The client was using another CAD package that created rough parts without dimensions that had to be modified or rebuilt to be workable.

Component Integration

The client had internal components from a previous generation product that had to fit inside the form factor while working around functional keep-outs and requirements.

Working With STP Files

I had to add planes and features to the imported step files to be able to orient them correctly in the assembly file.

Skills Demonstrated

  • Master assembly design

  • PCB integration

  • Extruded metal design

  • Plastic part design

  • Designing with tolerances
