Problem

Needed to create an integrated PopGrip solution for cases that would create pocket-ability and swap-ability of the grip while maintaining comfort.

Solution

The pebble form of this case created a subtle ramp for the edge of a pocket to slide over the grip rather than catch. It also reduced the overall thickness and allowed for wireless charging.

Multiple rounds of iteration and prototyping of different forms was needed to get the right shape and balance of features including pocketability, comfort, and finger room for popping and twisting of the grip

Challenges Met

 

Form

The pebble form was a a difficult surface challenge that required multiple iterations and patch techniques to achieve the seamless form.

 

Swappable Grip

The Quick Release (QRX) project was an ongoing project in parallel which in itself was a high priority and difficult project that I worked on. The UX of the quarter turn mechanism had to be taken into account in terms of finger space for the rotaion.

Timeline

This was a high priority project that drove a tight timeline and pressure to get this to market as soon as possible.

 

Slim form

We pushed the limits of wall thickness to keep a slim form while maintaining optimal protection and manufacturability.

Graphic Compatibility

we integrated IML for graphics which was a challenge to hold in the tool without drifting.

 

Protection

We developed a new pill-shaped impact geometry that provided drop protection comparable to top competitors. I performed drop testing at a third party testing facility to verify.

 

Skills Demonstrated

 

Advanced Surfacing

We maintained C2 curvature which was a test of my surfacing skills. This project tested my surfacing skills as well as the limitations of the Solidworks software, but I definitely learned a lot from it.

 

Project Management

With a small team I worked with the vendors and one industrial designer to drive this project. We communicated directly with our manufacturer and pushed them to try some things they weren’t necessarily comfortable with.

 

Material Knowledge

I was able to implement some knowledge from past experience but working with new materials and processes such as IML proved to be a challenge.

 

Otterbox Collaboration

After we designed this case for multiple apple phones it was determined a better strategy to collaborate with Otterbox as they are a leading brand that could easily get us peg space and higher margins. While it was difficult to let go of a design we had so much ownership of this proved to be a partnership business-wise.
